So called for "the thickness of a small spike", spaghetti is the typical Italian pasta. In the 12th century Marco Polo brought with him the chinese traditional pasta, but even before some writings already talked about Vermicelli in Sicily. In the 19th cent. it spread widely, especially in Naples and Genoa

Originally of central-northern Italy, they are also known as "friars sleeves" (especially in Emilia-Romagna) with reference to warm-summer clothes; are now very widespread in the South. It belongs to the family of "macaroni" because of the straight cut, the circular section and the groove on the outside
